How To Get More Disk Space For Steam Mac

I thought this was because i had the beta version and it wasn't compatible somehow with the release version. So i decided to simply delete local content and re-install. But during install i get this error message 'not enough disk space', when a few steps earlier it clearly said i have 174307MB free and the game requires 259MB. What's going on here? Is it a Steam problem or a Don't Starve problem? At the moment i can't play this game at all. Adobe reader for mac 10.6. As i said, i'm playing on Win XP.

I'd like to get OS X back on said laptop, but I can't find a way to do this as I can't find any installation media images and the other tools (such as the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant) require access to another Mac. I have no access to another OS X device at the moment. Free download mp3.
