MacBook Pro or Air for video editing, photo editing and watching lots of videos? Hi, Basically I am either getting the MacBook pro or air for Christmas this year. I am going into year 10 and am wanting a laptop that will allow me to do school and college work. The 2017 MacBook Pro is the best Mac option for photo and video editing. After a new round of testing, we found that the 2018 MacBook Air is the best Mac laptop for most people—it has the best features and performance for the price.

I noted that although my MacBook Pro fared quite well against the Mac Pro for common “photography workflow” tasks, that an iMac would probably do even better! Well now I have a NEW iMac Retina 5k Mac to test/review and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the results. I was a little blown away! The same game rules apply! If you don’t like Macs/Apple or don’t want a Mac for whatever your reasons are, you can pretty much stop here and find something else to do with your time. I find it entertaining when people feel compelled to tell you/me how much they don’t want the thing you’re reviewing or writing about because they use something else. This is not a Mac vs.
While I had the machines next to each other I tried opening some apps, restarting, and other tasks to see how they performed next to each other. I really didn't see any difference in my non scientific test. Once I decided that I didn't need the screen of the pro and that they performed pretty close to the same the decision was easy. Go for the air.
While the new MacBook Pro is 14% thinner and 10% lighter than the previous version, this emphasis on thinness is meaningless to me given all the rest of the gear I need for training, presentations or editing. NOTE: However, it has been pointed out that video journalists who need to travel swift and light in difficult areas aren’t able to take extra gear. For them, thin is good. Battery life is also much less important to me. Anywhere I’m editing, I’m plugged in.
As usual, the 2015 MacBook is an impressively engineered device, but I don’t think it will be a good laptop computer for photographers. The screen is far too small. There isn’t enough CPU (a new “mobile” processor that is NOT the same as the past).
Clearly, with a laptop, portability and battery life are more important than they are with a desktop system; just as screen size and horsepower are more important to a desktop than a laptop. It would be nice to create a computer system with no limits, but that is not the real world. In the real world we need to balance competing demands.
At the end of the project I just pop the portable drive on the shelf, et voila; three redundant backups. Once every month or so, we backup the Drobo and move that disc offsite. I have been so happy with the MBAir that I recently sold my giant home iMac.
You have to see it in person with your own eyes to appreciate it! One the biggest reasons I would recommend an iMac over a Mac Pro to a photographer beside the money saved, is the fact that you’re getting a 27″ 5K Hi-DPI (Retina) display! Your images are going to look amazing on this display. I was blown away by the sharpness and the detail.

As they are building them they cut every corner they possibly can. It is worse for laptops than desktops. So you may be able to buy a PC for considerably less money than a Mac, but the Mac may last longer. Will a Mac last long enough to make the higher initial cost worth it? Depends a lot on your use. I think it is very similar to a car. The same car will last much longer for the old lady driving to church on Sundays vs.

Just as I stated in the article, I am not really pleased with the durability of PC laptops, they seem to fall apart much sooner than they should.
